One of the new things happening at your Community Centre in 2012 is Food Swap.
Do you have too much homegrown food? Come to our Food Swap, the second Saturday morning of every month and bring along your food and swap it for something else.

Turn lettuce into tomatoes! Turn jam into carrots!

The Food Swap begins at 9:30am and goes through til 11am at 33 Mt Pleasant Rd, Belmont.
If you don't have anything to swap you can also buy unswapped food from 10:30 on, after the swapping has been done.

In the top left hand corner of our blog you'll notice we've added a second program to download. This is a specific program exclusively for SBCC's computer courses. As these don't change on a term-to-term basis and are often too numerous to fit all of them into our term program, we've given them their own document that allows the space to cover much more information.

Also included in the program is all the necessary information to book a place for them, so please browse or print out the program and get in contact with SBCC if anything takes your fancy.

Note: as listed in the current program there has been a price increase in some of our courses, namely the One On One Computer Help has gone up from gold coin donation to $5 a session and the Computer Courses have gone up from $10 per session to $15 per session. This increase has been a necessity to cover our increasing costs but we hope you find our offerings still good value for money.

We have a small number of places left for the Bird On A Stick Mosaic workshop running this Saturday June 4 from 1pm - 5pm. This workshop provides an excellent intorduction to the medium of mosaic work and the cost of $55 includes all materials as well as instruction.

Save Money Save Energy Information Session

SBCC is proud to offer a FREE information session presented by St Laurence and Sustainability Victoria in smart ways to save money on your energy bills.

This session will help you work out what things you can do in your home - whether you rent or own- to find those escaping dollars.

This session will run Thursday 3 March, 10:30 to 12:00pm at SBCC Offices, 33 Mt Pleasant Rd. Belmont.

This session is entirely free and a light lunch will be provided afterwards.
Please bring your gas, water and electricity bills (for only you to look at)

SBCC Annual General Meeting 2010

On the 11th of November 2010 the South Barwon Community Centre Inc. held it's Annual General Meeting. The night had a warm and friendly atmosphere with community members enjoying the proceedings and learning what the past financial year had brought our organisation.

Outgoing chairperson Sandy Towers chaired the meeting with co-ordinator Jan Rockliff enlightening the attendees of the Centre's succcesses and acheivements the year had brought us.

The night wound down with wine and nibbles as everyone got the chance to circulate and have a good chat. A special mention must go the winners of the Digital Camera Basics' course Scavenger hunt who were presented with their prizes for taking the best photos as judged by their peers.

As part of the mural community art project currently underway there was also lots of hand tracing done by participants of the night to go into the painting. But more on that next year!

Broadband For Seniors Now Available at SBCC!

Thanks to the Australian Government and NEC we are proud to offer a Broadband for Seniors Kiosk at our offices at 33 Mt. Pleasant Rd. Belmont.

The Broadband for Seniors Kiosk is an Internet kiosk available to anyone 50 years or over who wants to learn how to use a computer and surf the Internet free of charge.

SBCC provides volunteers with computer experience to assist and aid in the learning process for those in need or those just beginning and wanting to learn about using the internet.

These kiosks are completely FREE of charge but we do require you to book. Individuals are allowed up to an hour at a time. These computers are available at any time during our regular business hours: 9am - 5pm Monday to Thursday and 9am - 4pm Friday.

Please come by our offices during our business hours to use this facility or call the centre on 5243 8388 to book your time.

Smoking Reduction Project

A Course in Sustainable Thinking

This 10-week program educates and empowers people who wish to learn what it means to be sustainable. Touching the very essence of why many of us feel overwhelmed by the task ahead, this course emphasises that to be sustainable we need to start with ourselves.

Human beings are not inherently flawed, yet our culture’s underlying beliefs in separation, scarcity and inevitability are deeply flawed. Each affects our actions in ways that undermine sustainability principles yet all three are endemic. They are the background ‘noise’ of society and the source of humanity’s problems. Even so, for the most part, we are utterly unaware that they exist. How can we not feel overwhelmed when our automatic reactions are not an authentic expression of who we say we want to be?

Recognising how they play out in your own life strengthens your ability to rise above them. In this way your ability to create sustainability for self, family and community is greatly enhanced, and is more likely to succeed.

About the Facilitators:
Maria Straub is the founder and managing director of Green Purchasing, a consulting, project management and training company dedicated to getting environment into business. Developing many community education programs, both in Australia and overseas, Maria’s desire is to encourage people to seek larger answers to sustainability questions in ways to move them beyond their perceived limitations.
Helen Long is the facilitator and manager of Community Education. Helen has been involved in facilitating change in communities throughout Victoria for sixteen years. An educator and counsellor, Helen’s passion brings value and voice to people’s concerns, not only around family and community, but also to fulfil their innate desire to sustain the planet. Helen finds that by reflecting back their own inner wisdom, people feel inspired and empowered to reach for their dreams.

Organic Edible Gardening

A Short History of Scribes Writers July 2003 -2008

Where we have come from

In 2003 as a South Barwon Community Centre Inc. (SBCC) volunteer I proposed to the then coordinator, Mary Coward, that I begin a writing group. One person had rung to find out if there was a writing group in the area so the timing was right. The first session was held in July 2003. By the end of the year we had approximately 4-7 members.

The aims of the group were two fold, to facilitate people’s creative writing development and bring people together to counter social isolation in an affordable and accessible setting. The name Scribes evolved from group member discussion and decision making process.

Scribes Writers is now a diverse group of enthusiastic writers sharing group management. Each person brings their own lifetime experiences to enhance the membership and activities of the whole. The group aims to provide a creative environment where people can realise their imaginative, artistic writing potential and reach a professional level of confidence and competence.

How we got where we are…

From the beginning we have developed and maintained group strengths through peer support; encouraging leadership skills; sharing decision making, information and resources in weekly structured writing group meetings in a friendly environment.

While most of the successes of Scribes Writers are the direct result of the effort and dedication to the group by every member we value and appreciate the assistance given so generously and willingly by the Committee of Management, the coordinator(s) and volunteers of the SBCC Inc.

What we have achieved…

1 2004 Scribes joined the Victorian Writers’ Centre (VWC). Membership gave the group access to the centre’s workshops, magazine and made us eligible to apply for regional funding for workshops. The first financial outlay for the annual subscription was shared 50:50 from individual members and the SBCC funds. In 2005 SBCC paid the whole subscription but all other years the membership fee has been funded solely by Scribes.

3. Group meeting activities

Over the years members have led group sessions covering a variety of writing topics. Some include – poetry, structuring stories, idea generation, characterisation, figurative/descriptive writing, grammar, editing; markets, formatting, diction, dialogue, style, point of view, research - both for fiction and non-fiction writing, article writing, short stories, genre, critiquing, journalism, children’s writing, self-publishing, submission writing, sourcing funding, internet and computer skills, interviewing techniques, copyright and legal responsibilities.

In 2005 members work was collected into a mini-anthology The Assembly Line, this was later used as a prototype for the 2006 publication, One For D’ Road..

4. One For D’ Road…a 2 year project - 2005-6

CoGG Arts Grant – The purpose was to produce a quality book of 150 pages comprising both fiction and non-fiction, artwork and photography that highlighted and celebrated the social life and history of the Ford Motor Company and Geelong people.

The anthology included short stories, poems, biographies and profiles as well as photography and artwork to complement the written content. The process could broadly be summarised as preparation; permissions; text design, layout and cover design; bibliography; acknowledgements; printing; promotion and marketing and finally the launch and distribution.

Benefits for individual members

Strengths gained – networking and establishing contacts, financial management (especially GST), printing and publishing knowledge, improvement in narrative and other writing skills, confidence as writers and individuals, ability to take on larger writing assignments, skill development and increased opportunities for information dissemination through a power point production, pride in the writers by their contribution to Geelong’s literary heritage.

Through publishing more people know about the SBCC Inc and its services and encouraged a wider membership for the writing group.

5. Community participation

2004 Written submission to the CoGG Arts Forum and oral presentation at the launch of the Creativity arts program.

6. SBCC Inc AGM

Members have participated by giving readings and reports at the AGM from 2004. to March 2007.

7. Publishing

Scribes Writers has an ongoing opening for articles and stories with the Geelong News.

Members have participated in competitions, published in the Geelong Advertiser, New Idea, Geelong Seniors and Reader’s Digest and read their work on the ABC and local community radio. Some members have also read their work at community functions e.g. Shearer’s Arms.

8. Library - building resources.

With part of the surplus from the sales of the anthology Scribes Writers invested in a reference library - dictionary, thesaurus, marketing manual and other writing books. These books are available as a community resource. These add to Scribes’ existing collection of writing and literary magazines.

Our unique logo identifies the group and signifies our commitment to quality in our writing.

Where do we go in 2008

Refining the quality of our work – through editing, audio-video opportunities -film - more marketing and publishing…family history…fiction and non-fiction .
Writing and self-publishing the Geelong Events Anthology

Jigsaw Library: Our newly developed jigsaw library has a growing selection of puzzles for all age groups to borrow. All our puzzles are available to borrow for a month and we graciously accept donations of preloved jigsaw puzzles for others to enjoy. Please drop by our Belmont offices to peruse our selection.

A New Service For Centre Users: We are proud to offer a new typing service for people requiring printed documents who are unable to access a computer or have limited skills. All jobs are subject to volunteer availability and rates are negotiable on an individual basis. Do you need your resume, letters, short stories, whatever your imagination can create we can put on paper. Please contact us for more information.

Join The New SBCC Stroller Group!

Come along and join our strollers group and share in great company for you and your little one while you take in the walking tracks around Belmont. Enjoy the scenic Barwon River in a fun, group atmosphere while exercising at the same time.

About Us

South Barwon Community Centre Inc is an incorporated body run by a voluntary committee of management. It is staffed by one part-time co-ordinator and a great team of volunteers.

Funding for the Centre is provided by Department of Planning and Community Development(DPCD)as well as various grants from the City of Greater Geelong.

South Barwon Community Centre is part of the Neighbourhood House network and aims to develop a range of activities and programs that meet the community needs and reflects the principles of:
